Batik Stories is a simulation game designed to educate the public about Bekasi batik—from its history and unique facts to an introduction to various other patterns—using a video game approach that is expected to appeal to the public.

Story Behind Project
This is my final project for my course, in which I discovered that batik in my area was actually unknown to the local residents, including myself. So, I visited the Bekasi batik community to ask about their stories and the challenges they face, gathering this information as research data before starting to develop the game.

Character Design
After the development planning phase, I started with the design aspect by creating 3D models of the main character and several NPCs, as well as designing 2D characters for the UI and in-game dialogue.

After finishing the characters, I also started designing the game environment, the shop, and the small details to ensure that all requirements were met and to create a traditional yet fun atmosphere.

I also included several Bekasi batik designs and ultimately decided to include 8 of the more than 30 motifs that Bekasi has to offer. Each motif here depicts a distinctive feature of Bekasi, ranging from traditional toys, customs, and fruits to local events and the region’s natural characteristics.

Making Batik Mechanic
Batik-Making Mechanics: In this minigame, players will face the challenge of using a mechanism to land the hitbox precisely, and the creation process will be completed as players successfully hit the hitbox repeatedly.

Selling Batik Mechanic
In the game “Batik Stories,” there is a feature that allows you to sell the batik you’ve selected; you can choose batik that suits customers who want to buy, and each piece has a different selling price.

Unlock New Batik Motifs
Unlock various batik patterns; before unlocking them, players must have the knowledge to answer questions about those patterns, and this information can be accessed by purchasing a book on the patterns.

To continue the story, there will be a button to proceed, provided a certain popularity threshold is met; popularity can be earned as the store grows.

After completing the game’s development, I had several game testers evaluate it to assess various aspects such as learning, storytelling, gameplay, and user experience, and I also had experts test it.

After completing all the steps in the game development process, I began showing my game to the community and at an exhibition during the final presentation of my thesis, and everyone received it warmly. In the end, I was able to graduate with honors at the conclusion of my college journey.

Reflection
Based on the results of the design process, it can be concluded that the “Batik Stories” game provides information about the traditional batik motifs of the Bekasi region.
Based on expert validation results, it appears that this game still needs improvement in terms of gameplay flow, as the current flow does not sufficiently challenge players.
